Scope & Objectives

IFNg

Human interferon-gamma (hIFNγ) is a crucial immunomodulating pleotropic cytokine, its biological effects ranging from proliferation to apoptosis. It can increase both the innate and adaptive immune response against pathogens and tumours while maintaining immune homeostasis. However, when overexpressed, hIFNγ can lead to autoimmune pathology (including multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, systemic lupus erythematous, rheumatoid arthritis and even the atherosclerosis and the post transplant atherosclerosis), inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Also in the acute phase of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel corona virus SARS-CoV-2, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines, particularly IL-6 and IFNγ, Hall_Hisar triggers a state of overreaction, the so-called cytokine storm, which seems to be the main contributor towards a fatal outcome of the illness. The treatment of such states may benefit from the inhibition of hIFNγ receptor, signal transduction or hIFNγ molecule.

The Workshop will focus on new approaches for fine regulation of the activity of endogenous hIFNγ. It will take place in HISAR Hall at Hotel Augusta, Hisarya.

Three types of talks are planned: 45, 35 and 30 minutes respectively, including time for discussions. No poster session is foreseen. The morning sessions on 19th and 20th May will be focused on topics within the scope of the EUropean TOPology Interdisciplinary Action (COST Action CA17139, EUTOPIA).
