Dedicated to the 65th birthday of Owe Axelsson.
Organizer
The Central Laboratory on Parallel Processing of the Bulgarian Academy
of Sciences in cooperation with the Division of Numerical Analysis and
Statistics of the University of Rouse will organize the second workshop
on "Large-Scale Scientific Computations".
This second in a row workshop fits in the scientific framework of the first
one, held in the International House of Scientists "F. Curie", Varna, Bulgaria,
June 7-11, 1997, and is planned to have two special tracks:
"Computational Linear Algebra"
"Large-Scale Scientific Computations of Engineering and Environmental
Problems"
Time
The workshop is scheduled for June 2-6, 1999; arrival on June 1,
and departure after midday on June 6.
Place
The workshop will be held at the Conference Center of BULBANK in Sozopol,
a picturesque town on the Black Sea coast, 36 km south of Burgas
(the nearest international airport).
Topics
Specific topics of interest (but not limited to) are the following:
-
Multigrid and domain decomposition methods
-
Adaptive methods and local refinement algorithms
-
Splitting algorithms for coupled systems
-
Basic iterative methods and preconditioning techniques
-
Robust preconditioning of parameter dependent problems
-
Conservative schemes and mixed finite element computations
-
Efficient algorithms for non-conforming finite element problems
-
Multiscale methods: theory and computation
-
Eigenvalue and eigenvector computation
-
Stability of algorithms in numerical linear algebra
-
Fast algorithms for structured matrices
-
Least squares and total least squares
-
Linear algebra algorithms in signal processing
-
Rank-revealing computations
-
Parallel algorithms and performance analysis
According to the planned special tracks of the workshop, the Organizing
Committee also encourages contributions related to advanced applications
of large-scale scientific computations in such fields as: computational
fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, computational chemistry, computational
biology, etc.

Following the already established tradition, the Organizing Committee is
ready to consider suggestions for some additional special sessions related
to the special tracks of this workshop as well as in some more specific
and/or advanced topics of the large-scale scientific computations. Participants
interested in organizing such special sessions are invited to contact any
of the organizers or the secretary of the workshop.
Scientific Program
The lectures begin on June 2 morning. Therefore the arrival date
is June 1. The lectures are planned to continue till noon, June 6. There
will be plenary and invited lectures of approximately 40 min and presentations
in the special sessions. The duration of the talks in the special sessions
will be determined by the corresponding session organizer(s). The talks
not included in any of the special sessions will be 20-30 min long plus
time for discussion.
Proceedings
Proceedings of only refereed and presented papers will be published in
a book form. Our intention is to establish a tradition publishing the
workshop volumes in the VIEWEG Series Notes on Numerical Fluid
Mechanics.
